Expanded Review & Talk
The Expanded section, now in its second year, began as a Japan-first; this section is dedicated entirely to large-scale works and installations. The goal is to provide not only an enhanced viewing experience, but also create a procurement cycle for large-scale art. This talk invites Ms. Kanazawa Kodama, an organizer of numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad (and who has also been involved in many commissioned works) and Ms. Kisaka Aoi of Chishima Real Estate Co., Ltd. who supports artistic and cultural activities held in Osaka and provides creative activity bases, to explore the social role of art and the potential behind the Expanded section, and share their knowledge in the process.

Kanazawa Kodama
Holds a BFA from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, as well as a Master’s degree in Contemporary Art Curating from the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the United Kingdom. After 12 years of working at public art museums, including Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, Kodama became independent in 2013, and worked afterward as the curatorial director of Towada Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan, from April 2017 to March 2020. Founder and artistic director of Code-a-Machine (Kanazawa Kodama + Masui Shinichiro). Co-chair of JP, an online contemporary art event. Visiting professor at Kyoto University of Arts.
Kisaka Aoi
Graduated from Kobe University, Faculty of Literature. Involved in art management since her studies and freelance mainly in Osaka. 2016 joined Chishima Real Estate Co., Ltd. and is in charge of art projects. 2018, she became Executive Director of Chishima Foundation for Creative Osaka.
The Professor’s Eternal Love of Art: From Vermeer to Mpata
Fukuoka Shinichi is a biologist as well as an art lover, and has built a reputation as an ardent Vermeer enthusiast. He has written many books bridging science and art, including Vermeer: Kingdom of Light, a travelogue of his visits to see Vermeer’s works around the globe. Also one of the producers of the Osaka-Kansai Expo which will be held in 2025. Mr. Fukuoka will talk about our love of art and collecting, from an all-encompasing perspective dabbling in the mysteries of destiny (life itself) of artwork, which has had a history longer than our human lifetimes, while unraveling his own history with art.

Fukuoka Shinichi
Born in Tokyo in 1959. Graduated from Kyoto University. Professor at Aoyama Gakuin University and Visiting Professor at Rockefeller University. While conducting research in molecular biology, he has published a series of grounded books explaining the workings of ‘life’ in an easy-to-understand manner. His flagship work includes the best-selling books Between Organism and Inanimate Object, the Dynamic Equilibrium series, and Reading Nishida’s Philosophy with Fukuoka Shinichi. He has also built a reputation as a great Vermeer fan, and is the author of Vermeer’s Kingdom of Light. His recent works include Seimei Kairyu Galapagos, and the adventure novel, Dr. Dolittle Saves Galapagos. Organizer of the Schola Sapientia by Fukuoka Shinichi seminar series.

Where the Cultural Area Nakanoshima is Headed
Nakanoshima is one of Osaka’s leading cultural areas. This unparalleled area features art museums, various cultural facilities, historical buildings, businesses, in coexistence with a waterfront environment. What fresh creativity lies at the helm in Nakanoshima with the utilization of these resources? With guests invited from two different facilities participating in the Creative Island Nakanoshima network, this talk includes Shima Atsuhiko and his art-museum perspective, along with Hattori Shigeki, who sees things through the viewpoint of design and regional projects.

Shima Atsuhiko
Born in Toyama, 1956, and graduated from Waseda University in 1980. Having worked previously as a curator of the Museum of Modern Art, Toyama and The National Museum of Art, Osaka, as a director of Aichi Prefectual Museum of Art, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, arriving at a director of The National Museum of Art ,Osaka in 2021.
Hattori Shigeki
Born 1970 in Osaka, Japan. graf Representative, Creative Director, Designer. Professor at Kyoto University of Art. graf is a creative unit that considers and implements various elements of daily life from the perspective of manufacturing. graf has been active since 1993, and has developed new fields by taking advantage of the environment and characteristics of different industries. In addition to serving as the president of graf, Hattori also designs and directs work as a conceptor. His products translate society from the perspective of all design fields.
Osaka, Waterfront, Art
This year marks the second year Art Osaka has been held at two different locations; the Nakanoshima and Kitakagaya Areas. Connected through the Osaka waterways, both house a trove of art and creativity that Osaka city should be proud of. Two artists from Osaka will be invited to talk about the future possibilities of the intersection between Osaka, Waterfronts, and Art, both from their places of creation and through the themes of their artwork.

Osaki Nobuyuki (artist),

Osaki Nobuyuki
Born in Osaka in 1975. Completed graduate studies at Kyoto City University of Arts, and was a Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs overseas trainee for emerging artists in Germany from 2021-22. Currently based in Aichi and Osaka. In order to perceive the world based on his own existence, he creates works that visualize uncertainty, through unique methods such as dissolving painted pictures. His work deepens the sensations and thoughts that arise through images disappearing, and have us examine the existance of motifs and images such as memory and time.
Oozu Daisaku
With the themes of depiction/depicting, Oozu continues to re-capture humans active in light and shadow in his photography centered work. Born in Osaka in 1973. Recent exhibitions include: flow / float (solo exhibition at Gallery Parc, Kyoto, Japan), Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art (Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki, 2023), Rokko Meets Art (Kobe, 2022), Loop Line (solo exhibition at eitoeiko, Tokyo, 2022), Unfinished Spiral (solo exhibition at Old – Museum Zoo Station / Tokyo / 2019), Love Love Show 2 (Aomori Museum of Art / 2017), Saitama Triennale (Saitama / 2016), etc.
Planning and facilitation
Kinoshita Chieko
Born in 1971. Graduated from Kobe Design University Graduate School. Specialized in contemporary art, cultural policy, and project production. After working as an art producer at Kobe Art Village Center, he joined Osaka University in 2005. He is mainly engaged in the management of “Art Area B1,” a community space for businesses, NPOs, and universities, and the “Creative Island Nakanoshima,” a network project of 14 institutions including art museums, with the theme of “society-academia co-creation. In addition, he is an expert committee member and project director of cultural policy for government, corporations, and foundations.

SSK (Super Studio Kitakagaya)
SSK is the largest shared studio in Osaka where talented, up-and-coming artists and creators from various fields actively create art. During the period, SSK Art Fair 2023, an exhibition held by volunteer residents, will be held in the SSK space.

A private art museum of artist Yasumasa Morimura, the 8th exhibition “Face -KAO-,” which ended in May, will be on special display on the first floor, where “Emu-no-ichi” will be held, featuring unique stores selling aromas, sundries, shaved ice, and other items. Please enjoy this exclusive event.

“Kitakagaya Crawl”, a Ticketed Circuitous Event
A ticket-based event will be held for the first time, allowing visitors to tour around Kitakagaya’s stores. Thirty-two stores, including cafes, taverns, general stores, workshops, and public bathhouses, will participate in the event. Each store will offer a special “Kitakagaya Crawl Menu” to welcome visitors.
