MAKI was originally established in 2003 as SAKURADO FINE ARTS, later changing its name to the present one to reflect its focus on emerging artists, while continuing to specialize in post-war and contemporary Japanese art. In recent years, MAKI Gallery has held exhibitions by artists of high calibre, such as Mungo Thomson, Miya Ando, and Kaz Oshiro, who are based in the United States. The gallery is also keen on supporting and nurturing emerging artists, both Japanese and international. In addition to the gallery space in Omotesando, Tokyo which opened in 2014, MAKI opened two new spaces in 2020 on the ground floor of TERRADA ART COMPLEX I & II in Tennoz, Tokyo. The new spaces in Tennoz consists of MAKI Collection, where a selection of works collected by gallery owners, Mr. and Mrs. Maki, are exhibited, as well as a gallery space where temporary and permanent exhibitions are held throughout the year.
