Kenichi Shikata, born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1983, apprenticed under artist Asao Tokoro and graduated from Waseda University’s School of Art and Architecture in 2007. Currently based in Tokyo and Chiba, he creates sculptures, installations, and photographs that incorporate the surrounding environment through patterns composed of geometry and material properties. He actively participates in numerous international art festivals and installs many works as part of architectural projects.
Under the guidance of Asao Tokoro, Shikata logically develops his works from conception to drafting and production. However, during the creation process, he experiences surprise and joy at the complex and diverse perspectives that emerge, which he himself did not initially envision. While his works are often perceived as mechanical and precise due to their stainlesssteel material, they also embrace and incorporate elements of chance, a quality that becomes evident to those who engage with his art.
